EarthNC General Feedback

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

  2. Router Tool

The Router box pops up right in the middle of the map screen - why not make it movable or at least pop up to one side or the other?

    Love your program, Chuck

We’ve gone back and forth between a movable panel for the router and anchoring it and all of the other layers on one side or the other. We’ll keep playing with it and, potentially, allow for both. Thank you for kind comments!

  4. allow editing and annotating Points of Interest.

I sail on an inland lake. All the markers and bouys are shown as POIs with no other info. I want to be able to add naming info such as the marker number and to be able to add a description.

This is a good idea and one that we’re hopefully close to implementing with our universal ID system so that you can append comments on both the app, web-site etc… Not sure when this will happen, but we’re working on it.

  5. measure distance between two points

Give user ability to measure the distance between points.

We’re working on a separate ruler function. Right now, you can drop a waypoint and select “guide me” and it will measure the nautical distance, but we recognize it could be easier. Stay tuned.

This is actually somewhat tricky as the app isn’t intended to be an early warning system for shark avoidance. There’s a whole lot of liability that we could never assume in doing. That said, the idea is intriguing…

  7. Add a way to edit the lat/long of saved waypoints.

Can change the name of a waypoint but not the lat/ long.

  8. "Harden" the GUI for use on a bouncy boat/rough water

The #1 problem I have with EarthNC use in general, is using the interface while the boat is in motion. The boat is bouncing and rocking - buttons and stuff hard hard to get at. Some of this is unavoidable (like route planning or doing stuff in "settings"), but other operations could be improved with ... I don't know ...maybe some sort of "gestural" mode.

The biggest of these issues deals with zooming and GPS mode. So in particular - when I'm cruising on the water, I often leave the GPS *ON* (obviously), my-position-centered, and the mode where it rotates…

  9. give the user ability to update/change coordinates

Once a pin has been dropped and saved, it would be nice to have the ability to change the coordinates on a pin all ready on the map.

  10. Modify the vessel icon with line-segment extension to hint speed/direction

It would be useful to add a line segment radiating from the current location in the direction of travel. The length of the line segment would represent the distance that would be covered in X minutes at the current speed (programmable). This way one could easily judge the time before reaching a mark or hazard, independent of chart zoom. The line segment would also serve as a better indicator of heading than the current arrow head.

The speed and heading could be filtered to avoid erratic line segment.

  11. give users the ability to change location icon.

Let the user change location icon to a car, boat, or plane. Not just an arrow.

  12. Mississippi River

Is there any way you could make the Mississippi River charts available at this link available in EarthNC for iPad?

  13. What Inland Rivers are included? I don't see any?

The literature states that some USACE River charts are include. I am looking for the Arkansas, Mississippi and the Tenn_Tom and don't see them?

  14. Google Maps KMZ Import

People send me KMZ files via email. When you click on one, you get an "Open With..." popup allowing you to open it with various apps which support it. It would be nice if EarthNC could open them, and import these files as routes.

I live on the Pacific Ocean side of the planet, California to be exact. Could this app be modified to find whales while you are on shore. Humpback whales migrate from Mexico to Alaska, it would be nice and cool if you could track whales while on shore from an IPad using tech software and NOAA satellites. Could it be available to the public in some near future update?

    Hi Steve,

The quick answer is that we’re working with various agencies and sanctuaries to expande the coverage of the Whale Alert app. More details coming up in the coming weeks!

    Kind Regards,

  18. Cached Google Satellite maps in the Android app.

Its easier to see some narrow or unmarked channels when you can see the water color changes on those images. Very helpful when flats fishing. Would be great even if its not overlaid with NOAA map data.

Not sure why our user docs are disappearing after 10 minutes. Can you describe the situation further. In the meantime, we’ve tried user-supported wiki docs and we found ourselves doing more editing than just creating the docs in the first place. A shabby excuse, but sometimes its better to simply do it oneself. We’ll keep at improving it. FYI, the docs should always be present in the phone / ipad / android device so let us know what’s happening there.

Update as of August 22 2012, we are waiting on CHS at this point. We hope to have the charts at our disposal any day now.

We agree. Canada does not make it easy because of cost and encryption requirements, but we’re hoping to get to it this summer.
