Update as of August 22 2012, we are waiting on CHS at this point. We hope to have the charts at our disposal any day now.

We agree. Canada does not make it easy because of cost and encryption requirements, but we’re hoping to get to it this summer.

  2. Distance/Range/Proximity Rings

I think your product rocks and definitely meets most of my needs. The one thing I would like to see, and I think other users may appreciate is distance/proximity rings around your location. The bottom of the display gives you a distance scale, which is great, but it would be great to take that scale (or user defined scale preferable) to draw proximity rings/circles around your location so that distance to an object could be easily determined at a glance. There are several reasons why this would be beneficial. The main one for me and the reason I would like…

A great idea – makes a lot of sense. There’s a number of ways we might approach this. Where this item is, in the list of things to do is unclear, but we’ll start thinking about it. As an fyi, we’re working on user accounts such that boaters can create and edit waypoints & routes on either their mobile device or their desktop computer (via our Online Viewer) and then have it all be sync’d automatically. We’re also working on nexrad radar weather animation. We’re close.

Folks, our situation with this request is that we have fairly sophisticated algorithms that stitch all of the individual chart together as a seamless national quilt. In our system, you can search for a certain region (state, city, harbor or, for that matter, marker) and the system takes you right to that point. It would be very difficult to retrofit the system to “extract” individual charts. What would be helpful is to hear from you as to whether this is a make or break, or just something you’re used to doing?

    Ok, updated comment:

We’re looking into changing things so that magnetic / true is tied to your Settings selection throughout the app.

Also, you can swipe each waypoint individually to delete. You can also swipe the bottom descriptor to edit the name.

We’ll keep you posted on the magnetic / true settings issue. Thank you for your wonderful feedback.

  5. Use lat / long coordinates to set chart download region.

Allow downloading of charts by inserting lat / long coordinates (verus simply drawing a region by your finger).

  6. include a simple MOB button.

Just something easy and obvious when we're in a hurry to drop a waypoint.

For the time being, you can readily drop a waypoint by selecting the Flag icon on the main screen on both the iPhone and Android apps. We’re looking into how we can enable a MOB button that is larger and more prominent – without screwing up the overall UI. Will advise…:)

  8. Add option to overlay of imagery and chart layers

Occasionally I find it useful to view imagery and chart for a harbor at the same time - the image alone gives me general information on mooring fields, floating docks, and anchorages, but the overlay would give me specific navigation information on moorings, docks, and anchorages.

  9. Better controls for viewing Waypoints

    I mean two things:

    1. The software allows me to view "My Waypoints" as an overlay. Unfortunately, this clutters my map with *every* waypoint I've ever created. Allow me to select which ones I want to view. For example, I (nearly) always want to have my home marina handy. Depending on which trip I'm taking, I only may want to have certain ones visible on the map.

    2. Better delineation of "waypoints", vs. "points in a route". I created a few waypoints, and a few routes. Now, when I look at my waypoint list, my "waypoints" are cluttered in a…

We’re working on a separate ruler function. Right now, you can drop a waypoint and select “guide me” and it will measure the nautical distance, but we recognize it could be easier. Stay tuned.

  12. Fix compass readings

On the Charts App for iPad, I can only get true compass readings for directions towards waypoints. Switching to 'magnetic' still gives 'true' directions.

  13. Add a way to edit the lat/long of saved waypoints.

Can change the name of a waypoint but not the lat/ long.

  15. Support user-downloaded NOAA ENC files (on SD card).

I can download my entire cruising are from NOAA as ENC files. It would be way cool if I could transfer them to my SD card and have EarthNC use them.

This general idea keeps coming up so we’re thinking about ways we might include uploaded maps as another layer. Our principle challenge is that we currently tile all of the NOAA ENC’s into a singular chart layer (at all published zoom levels). So, incorporating imported charts would either have to be integrated into our process (somehow) or we would just allow them to appear as individual chart tiles – which might be a weird experience. If we’re supplying all of the same charts, we’re curious as to what the big payoff would be here?

  16. Mississippi River

Is there any way you could make the Mississippi River charts available at this link available in EarthNC for iPad?

  17. allow editing and annotating Points of Interest.

I sail on an inland lake. All the markers and bouys are shown as POIs with no other info. I want to be able to add naming info such as the marker number and to be able to add a description.

This is a good idea and one that we’re hopefully close to implementing with our universal ID system so that you can append comments on both the app, web-site etc… Not sure when this will happen, but we’re working on it.

  19. Push current vessel/location to web AIS services (Mobile apps)

Okay - this is kind of controversial - but if you were to partner up with one (or more) of the AIS data providers such as marinetraffic.com or aislive.com, you could "write" or "push" one's information (in AIS format) to these services, so one's vessel could be viewed from any of the services/web pages/software which uses this AIS data to display vessel locations.

This would let people view "live" vessel information through any such services - though it would (controversially) not be visible to people on vessels with actual AIS receivers.

    ALTERNATIVELY:

Any type of method to periodically push location/course/vessel…

Hi Brad, per our previous msg, we like the idea and have been thinking how we can best implement this – security / privacy issues notwithstanding. Will advise!

  20. Include detailed charts for great lakes in canadian territory (north channel).

It would be nice to have detailed charts in canadian territory for us great lakes boaters!
